Student Breakout Session #1: Is Opportunity for Everyone?

Joe Knittig

Room 2103 A

More Info

We're in the midst of a global orphan pandemic.  More and more parents in concentrated poverty cannot afford to care for their own children.  80% of the world's orphanages are filled by "economic orphans," i.e., parents - usually single moms - cannot afford their children, so they give them up.

Among the wealthiest in the world, "fast fashion" is in.  The simplest garments, custom tee-shirts, make up a $6 billion / year industry in the U.S., alone.  The Church buys many millions of custom tee-shirts every year:  staff tees, event tees, VBS tees, etc...  Dirt cheap is all the rage.  Yet on the other end of dirt cheap are hidden factories that pay slave wages and create orphans.  We know this is happening.  But we turn the other cheek because we like super cheap.

What should the Church's response to this be?  Is opportunity for everyone? Is dignity for everyone?
